WHAT WE'RE ABOUT

RBI focuses on using expressive writing, design-oriented work, photography, media, research, and community input to fuel fat positive, body acceptance, discussion, and outreach. Our goal is to redefine the way we view and think about body image, size, fat, discrimination, health, fitness, wellness, mental/chronic illness, stigma, and other related topics.

We are constantly redefining our own perspectives, and therefore tend to write a lot about our personal experiences. Many followers and contributors are living with anorexia, bulimia, body dysmorphic disorder, depression, and a variety of other body image disorders or mental illnesses, so please be respectful and remember that health applies differently to everyone. Any and all potentially triggering content will be prefaced with a trigger warning.

RBI supports all races, genders, classes, and sizes. We try our best to make this a safe space for everyone. If we are not doing our job or checking our privilege, we invite you to please inform us.

Some of the artwork you see here has been created by our founder or moderators, some sourced when applicable. Please be kind enough to source this blog whenever you share it's content.

We are not health professionals. Any and all advice provided on this blog is supported only by our own research, studies, and personal experiences; nothing more.

This blog is part of the Safe Space Network.

Our very own Amanda Levitt (RBI mod and blogger at http://www.fatbodypolitics.com) was a part of this HuffPost LIVE segment: Fat Stigma Starts Young.

Other notable contributors include Jenn Levya (http://fatsmartandpretty.com) and Rebecca Golden (http://butterbabe.blogspot.com), who speak authentically and with immense knowledge while combating comments like “oh but racism isn’t a thing anymore” and “oh but you HAVE to lose weight to be healthy”.

I’m also super impressed with the host Alicia Menendez for keeping everyone on-topic and providing a space for such important discourse. Brilliant.

Seriously, WATCH IT.

Why It’s Okay To Be Fat: Golda Poretsky at TEDxMillRiver

Watch this. Up-vote it on Youtube. Share it. <3

This video has just been bombarded in the comments by a gaggle of anti-fat, healthist fuckers. Golda presents so much important info in this talk that is being overshadowed by hate and ignorance and its such a goddamn shame. If you have a moment, and the energy, to deal with combating these trolls…please consider helping out down-voting derogatory comments, up-voting constructive ones, and adding your own love to the mix.

Dove hired a forensic artist to draw how women see themselves versus how others see them - the results are moving.

Love thyself

I had a strange, very strong reaction to this, because if it were left up to me, who knows how I would describe myself. Real tears. This was a powerful reminder coming from, for me, an unexpected source.

All of the feels.

I love this spot. I really do. Sometimes, I enjoy the way Dove frames these issues, and I can appreciate it.

But in the back of my mind, I am always thinking about the hypocrisy of embracing the notion of “real women” while leaving out a massive part of the population - as if they are any less real.

Dove says they are committed to building positive self esteem and inspiring ALL WOMEN and girls - but from what I can tell, that only applies so long as you’re not over a size 18. Deathfatties be damned.

imageAlso, the same company owns Axe, which uses some of the grossest, most objectifying images of women around at the moment.  Basically, I like the idea of the “Real Beauty” campaign, but am deeply deeply skeptical of Dove’s motives, and critical of their execution, which as Haley said, is still exclusive of a lot of people even though they claim to be body positive and to represent all women.

What a babeee <3

Restore ReDress!

Bring back the best independent plus size store in the world! (With more options and a new storefront!)

I just started crying the second the video started and haven’t stopped yet.

ReDress changed my life, Rachel Kacenjar changed my life and I’m SO excited to see what she does with such an important gamechanging project. The kind of power you give a fat body when you provide that person the opportunity to dress in a way that makes them feel good is invaluable. So many members of my family in this video doing amazing work and I’m just so fucking proud to know you <3

PLEASE HELP ANY WAY YOU CAN!!

I donated! Help bring them back! - Haley

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT BREATHING EASY

So my super dope homechick Ray sent me this amazing video. This fierce big boy is giving me EVERYTHING. Attitude, Confidence and Endurance.

These three things are SOOO important and often times as bigger dancers we are the ones who struggle with endurance. I’ll be the first one to tell you I struggle with faster dances. It’s hard for me to keep up and still dance with energy….which then often leads to lack of confidence. I used to get so frustrated with myself and often times get upset.

I’ve learned the best thing to do is practice, like full out, let it out, scream and shout practice.

As a big dancer you may have to practice more than others not because you don’t have the choreo down, rather to build your stamina. I cannot tell you how many times in college I almost felt like I was passing out after a dance because I was so out of breathe. I’ve learned that practicing FULL OUT a couple times a week really helps these days. My endurance is high and my endorphins are up, it’s a great feeling!! So keep pushing big dancers, we’ve already proved we can be hot, let’s show the world how we can move!!!!

You better werk!!!! <333!!

GET IT!!!

I can’t even walk in heels, much less dance. GET IT BABE

You better DO. IT.

TRAILER FOR TRICHSTER FILM

Film on Trichotillomania.

Right now, they are 66% funded and have till the 31st of January to raise money!

If you can’t donate, please reblog and share! :).

Thankyou for all your help so far, from all the team at Trichster!
(I should reiterate that this is not my film, but Jillian Corsie and I am happy to help, considering how much Trichotillomania impacts my life and others)

A big thankyou from me too.

Please donate here:
http://www.seedandspark.com/studio/trichster

This legitimately just made me cry. I know loved ones who live with trich and I myself live with dermatillomania, which involves the same kind of anxious/compulsive tendencies - so this hits very close to home, for me.

Please donate if you can, signal boost if you can’t. Any sort of media that shines a light on conditions like these is so necessary to the act of breaking down stigmas and allowing others to find the help they need.

MAMA CASS ELLIOT - Dream A Little Dream of Me

I thought about her, googled some more information, and discovered that no, she did not choke on a ham sandwich and die. In fact, she was fasting four days a week to lose weight, and had drastically shed 80 lbs at the time of her death, which, according to the autopsy, was caused by heart failure. This was most likely brought on by the severe weight loss technique she was using. Her desperate attempt to lose weight killed her, and because of a half eaten ham sandwich in her London flat, a venomous rumor has kept her alive in ironic mockery.

Another reason that I prefer combustion.

She was wonderful.

Bolded emphasis mine - That shit blows my fucking mind. Much love for Mama Cass.

“Elliot actually died from the far more prosaic “fatty myocardial degeneration due to obesity” in other words natural causes due to being overweight – she was prone to going on crash diets which in the end fatally weakened her heart.” [x]
