WHAT WE'RE ABOUT

RBI focuses on using expressive writing, design-oriented work, photography, media, research, and community input to fuel fat positive, body acceptance, discussion, and outreach. Our goal is to redefine the way we view and think about body image, size, fat, discrimination, health, fitness, wellness, mental/chronic illness, stigma, and other related topics.

We are constantly redefining our own perspectives, and therefore tend to write a lot about our personal experiences. Many followers and contributors are living with anorexia, bulimia, body dysmorphic disorder, depression, and a variety of other body image disorders or mental illnesses, so please be respectful and remember that health applies differently to everyone. Any and all potentially triggering content will be prefaced with a trigger warning.

RBI supports all races, genders, classes, and sizes. We try our best to make this a safe space for everyone. If we are not doing our job or checking our privilege, we invite you to please inform us.

Some of the artwork you see here has been created by our founder or moderators, some sourced when applicable. Please be kind enough to source this blog whenever you share it's content.

We are not health professionals. Any and all advice provided on this blog is supported only by our own research, studies, and personal experiences; nothing more.

This blog is part of the Safe Space Network.

Much love for all the fuzzy-body-love submissions! Keep them coming and I’ll work them into the queue. This was a fab idea. I may use your photos for future RBI activist designs and things in the future (unless you dictate otherwise) so i hope that is okay, they are just too precious!

[Image: Typographic message depicted in pastel purple and peach: “I am forever working against a culture of shame.”]

It’s been a while. Here’s a thing I made for you!

Working is the key word.

I want this as a bumper sticker for my car.

I am in the process of designing more of these babies!

I’ve decided to call them Activist Mantras and plan to make them into stickers and buttons and maybe other things so I can sell them and we can put the money back into bettering the RBI community.

Have an idea for a good Activist Mantra?

Submit it and it may end up as one of the designs!

Just be sure to include the title “Activist Mantra” so I know what you’re submitting for, and note your name/tumblr URL so that I can give you credit if I use it.

Mantras can include anything related to encouraging awareness of body politics, privilege and race politics, beauty standards, feminism, fat discrimination…You get the idea. <3

Earlier this evening, I (Britt) sat in a coffee shop with a friend I’ve known since college. We both were sometimes “odd women out” in our social group and we easily bonded in the past over our “uniqueness,” our “otherness,” our “woman of color-ness.” And today like days in the past, we discussed the lack of outlets for women like us, in a variety of different areas (creative writing, entertainment, academia).

It was a reminder of the work that is yet to come. When people mention women artists of color, they list a couple of established creatives and then stop. That’s the thing. If you can only name one or two, we are not where we need to be. And so, Sad Pretty Girls. This is not the only solution, but it is a call to action, an outlet, a small source of inspiration. We want to hear your voices.

We neglected to make a final call for submissions before the original deadline and so we have decided to extend the deadline for submissions to February 1, 2013. The previous guidelines still apply:

We are currently accepting submissions of previously unpublished short stories, illustrations, poems and essays. Pieces submitted may be in any style and on any subject. Submit a maximum of two essays or short stories (up to 2500 words long) and five poems (up to 50 lines long). The artwork submission guidelines are completely open.

Send all work as Word or image file attachments to sadprettygirlsofcolor@gmail.com with a short biographical write-up within the body of the email. New and established writers alike are encouraged to submit.

Love,

Sara, Safy, and Britt

YOU SHOULD SUBMIT GLORIOUS STUFF TO THIS IF YOU/YOUR WORK FITS THE GUIDELINES

HELLO AGAIN!

So I know the other day I was looking for some people to help me with this magazine that I am doing for college. The magazine is about body positivitybasically (Although my lecturer wanted me to narrow it down to just fat acceptance for women but I am not happy doing that) I have a lot of the content I want to use but I need your help with my “adverts” You know how in magazines half the magazine is taken up with adverts well as my magazine is sort of selling body positivity I want to replace these adverts with pictures of you and your stories.

So I need a high quality photo of you from the shoulders up against a plain white(or closest thing to) background. You can be wearing make-up or no make up-whatever you are comfortable with but I don’t really want to see clothes or jewellry in the photo. So I have given 2 examples there of what I would be looking for. I look naked but am in fact wearing a boob tube thing. Of course they don’t need to be edited or anything-I’ll do that! You can have your hands down or up like in the example, we don’t want every photo to look like a mugshot. you can be smiling or not. Whatever!I should be smiling but I dint have a lot of time this morning. If you want to email me your photo its sparrowandthefox@gmail.com I will also enable the submit button on my tumblr too if you want to go through that!

And then if you could submit a little piece to me about what body positivity means to you, or what body acceptance means to you. We all have insecurities about our bodies but I would like it to be mostly positive please! It can be as long or as short as you want, I will have fun playing around with typography if they are all different lengths.

I really want all kinds of people to help with this, it is about diversity so everyone is encouraged to submit something no matter your size, race, gender, sexual orientation etc!

You would seriously be doing me the biggest favour in the world if you could help out with this, I have such ideas! And finally could you please help me to spread the word for this because even though I have an amazing group of followers I don’t have that many. If you have any questions do not hesitate to ask, thank you for listening!
Love you all forever and thank you so much! <3

I have actually already taken photos like these! I just have to find them…

This is a really lovely idea.

(BTW - Cut off date for submissions is November 1st and photos of body parts are also accepted, as I’m reading in another post.)

Redefining Body Image // Call for Submissions // Photography

Reopening this call for photo submissions!

I am in great need of some photos to help inspire me as I continue to work on a new website and other projects for RBI. Your photos may be featured in future RBI tactics so any photos you submit may be used to help design:

  • RBI branding/logo/identity
  • a brand new legit blog
  • an upcoming zine
  • any future posters or viral image campaigns
  • etc, etc…

All bodies, all shapes, all races, all gender identities, all ages - Anyone and everyone - I want your body!

Want to submit? Follow these steps (and READ CAREFULLY, otherwise I won’t be able to use your submission!):

  • Either locate already existing photos or snap some new shots of your fabulous body. The photos must be as high quality as possible (high resolution, very little grain or blurriness, no mirror shots where you can see the camera and no webcam photos please.)
  • Keep in mind when selecting or taking photos that the idea is to accentuate your body shape, so please wear close-fitting clothing, a bathing suit, underwear, or something similar. No nudes please.
  • On the other hand, if you’re a fashion-forward individual and wish to submit some photos of you in your favorite outfits, that is also welcome.
  • Feel free to submit as many photos as you like and as many poses as you like - There are no limitations. Get fun and creative! It’s all about representing your shape.

Got questions? Ask.

Otherwise, submit away my dears!

As always, if you would like to reblog and spread the word that would be lovely. <3

karapassey:

I know I follow a lot of wonderful people who are body positive… For the next feature in the Manitoban we are doing a spread on BODY IMAGE!

Write a poem, draw a comic, write an article (500-600 words) about your experience with body image. Here are examples of things that you could write about:

- Female body image:
There is a lot to discuss when it comes to this controversial topic, from anorexic models, to photoshopped celebrities and unhealthy societal standards of female beauty. What is your opinion on this issue? Do you have experiences struggling with your own body image? How’d you overcome it and what advice do you have for other women? For a starting point see this article about Jennifer Hudson and her feelings on being “digitally slimmed-down”.
- Male body image:
>When it comes to the topic of body image the discussion usually surrounds women, but the Guardian reported that a new study hints that males maybe just as prone to body image issues, if not more than women. Checkout the article and share your opinion. Do you think there needs to be more discussion about male body image issues? How do you propose raising awareness of this issue?
- New Year’s Resolution:
At the top of many people’s New Year’s resolutions is the goal of weight-loss, but apparently only 12 per cent of people keep their resolution, while the rest get depressed when they break it. Have you had success with a New Year’s resolution to get fit? What advice do you have for success? For more thoughts on this topic read this article from Global News.
- Students and Healthy Eating:
As a university student it can be difficult to maintain a healthy diet. When faced with the stresses of busy schedules, a quick slice of pizza usually becomes the norm. Do you have advice or tips for students wishing to eat healthy? Are you currently struggling with balancing student life and eating healthily? Checkout this article from CTV and share your thoughts on the topic.
Hopefully the ideas above get you thinking about potential articles.

Article should be between 500 - 600 words. The deadline is January 17.
You can email submissions either to me at graphics@themanitoban.com or to our features editor, Chuthan at features@themanitoban.com.

Hi! I saw you submitted this and figured it would be best to reblog at the source.

This sounds great, however body image issues are not limited to binary gendered folks and I think it’d be lovely if you were to welcome non-binary individuals to participate in the submission process.

Hope all goes well! Will try to submit something myself if I can find the time.
