Thank you for being inclusive off all body types! Often pseudo-body-positive blogs are more about slogans like "real women have curves" forgetting or ignoring that there is a mass of skinny women, who have serious doubts and complexes about being a "real" or "complete" woman because of their lack of chest or curves in general. Since a lot of people don't know that skinniness is often genetic and cannot be changed by will (not that it should matter) it seems acceptable to demean skinny women on tv, in articles, in pop culture or on blogs, whereas if such explicit things were said about fuller body types it would launch a wave of complaints. (I find this to be true in Germany, where I live, it may be completely different in other countries or cultures). I noticed this because I’m skinny and I’m sure there are a lot of other overlooked body types as well, since a lot of the time people will only be asking for acceptance of their own body type, while gladly depreciating all other types.
Of course! To me, it’s only natural. I’ve experienced enough to know that EVERYONE has body issues. To me, the Fat Acceptance movement would be better represented under the name Size Acceptance in some instances.
The “real women have curves” issue is something that I feel has finally started to recede among those in the body-positivity community because we are quick to educate and set the record straight. I think when fat women first find their voice and their power, it was easy to default to saying such things.
I myself, in my youth and ignorance, have said things like “real women have curves” and “that skinny chick needs to eat a few cheeseburgers” - But for a young woman who felt her curves were a curse and that skinny women were out to get her, at the time - These words were empowering. One person took the liberty to explain to me why this frame of mind was negative and I was absolutely horrified with myself - But I was still learning. I have taken all that in and am now doing my best to pass it along.
Just as skinniness is often genetic and cannot be changed by will, so is fatness. Just as it seems acceptable to demean skinny women in visual culture, the same applies to fat women.
What I am trying to represent in this blog is that we ALL face the same bullshit regardless of size or gender. There is not a war to be won between the fatties and the skinnies - There is an alliance that needs to be formed.
